HOW TO INSTALL A CAR BATTERY
How to Install a Car Battery
Wondering how to install a car battery? It is a simple task, but there are a few precautions to take to ensure that it is done safely.
First, you need to have the proper tools:
- Wrenches
- Battery cleaning solution
- A new battery
- Wire brush
- Pliers
- Anti-corrosion spray
Once you have all of the necessary items, you are ready to get started. Wearing thick rubber gloves is also highly recommended to protect your hands, and you will want to be cautious when moving the battery to avoid spilling battery acid. If you do not feel comfortable installing a battery on your own and are searching for “car battery installation near me,” the technicians at Greenway Nissan of Brunswick would be more than happy to install a new battery for you.
Car Battery Installation Guide
- Make sure that the engine is off and the parking brake is engaged. Open the hood and locate the battery. Loosen the nut connecting the black cable (negative cable) from the battery using a wrench. Using tools specifically designed for this task can be quite beneficial.
- Once the nut is loosened, twist and pull the cable off. Do not use a screwdriver or another tool to pry it off if it is stuck. Doing so could damage the battery.
- Repeat the steps above to remove the red battery cable from the positive terminal.
- Loosen then remove the battery hold-down clamp, which is there to prevent the battery from moving in the engine.
- Carefully remove the battery using both hands. The battery is heavy, and dropping it could cause an unsafe leak.
- If there is any corrosion in the battery tray or on the hold-down clamp, remove it with a baking soda and water solution or a battery cleaning product.
- Use a wire brush to clean off the battery cable connectors with the same cleaning product.
- Place the new battery in the battery tray and tighten the hold-down clamp.
- If you have anti-corrosion solution, spray it on the positive and negative terminal of the new battery before it is connected. This can extend the life of the battery by minimizing future corrosion.
- Attach the battery cables to the battery terminals, first connecting the red cable, then the black cable.
- Check the battery connections and make sure the battery is securely in place.
